Meet the Maker: Robert Katende
Author, speaker and mentor are just a few of the words one could use to describe Robert Katende, the inspiring founder of Som Chess Academy, a non-profit organization that helps youngsters in the slums realize their full potential through chess. The goal of the school is to integrate principles of chess with management of daily challenges in life, enhancing abstract thinking, creativity and innovation.
What began as a local initiative in Uganda reached the international stage with the Walt Disney Pictures movie, Queen of Katwe, which depicts the life of Phiona Mutesi and her rise from the slums to become a chess champion with the help of her coach, Robert Katende.
A Knight Without a Castle is a powerful story presented in two parts. First from Robert's perspective — war refugee turned missionary living the improbable dream to empower kids in Ugandan slums through chess — a game so foreign there is no word for it in their native language. And then by debut author Nathan Kiwere—presenting heartfelt testimonies from Katende’s students.
